Government Updates: Interpreting, Benefits, Worker Protections and Visa Webinar
Four practical Australian Government updates for our community, including TIS National interpreter opportunities, Special Benefit information in Ukrainian, migrant worker protections, and an employer visa webinar.
The Australian Government’s NT Community Engagement Newsletter of 21 August 2026 includes several updates that may be useful to members of our community. We have brought four of them together here for easy reference.
The information below is sourced from the Department of Home Affairs Community Engagement Network. Please follow the official links for the latest details.
1. Career opportunities with TIS National
The Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National) provides interpreting services to government agencies, non-government organisations and businesses. Its phone, video and on-site services operate across Australia, 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Interpreters can choose their working hours while providing an essential service to multilingual communities. TIS National contracts interpreters in more than 160 languages and is appointing new service providers for languages in high demand.
Priority is given to interpreters with NAATI credentials. Due to current demand, TIS National may also consider suitably skilled and experienced applicants who want to build an interpreting career and obtain NAATI credentials in the future. Applicants must provide evidence of interpreting experience and reference letters.

2. Special Benefit information in Ukrainian
Services Australia has updated its translated Special Benefit factsheet, and Ukrainian is one of the 12 available languages.
The factsheet explains:
eligibility for Special Benefit;
how to make a claim;
mutual obligation and reporting requirements; and
changes that must be reported to Services Australia.
Eligibility depends on individual circumstances. Services Australia is the authoritative source for payment information and claims.
3. Protections for migrant workers
The Department of Home Affairs and Australian Border Force continue to work with the Fair Work Ombudsman and other agencies to identify worker exploitation, check that employers meet their obligations, and detect workplace or visa-law breaches.
Migrant workers can report employers who do not follow workplace laws to the Fair Work Ombudsman. This includes concerns about:
- pay and wages;
- leave and other entitlements; and
- discrimination.
Border Watch can receive reports about people who take a migrant’s passport, use their visa situation to threaten or force them to work, or force them to live in overcrowded and unsafe housing. A person making a report does not need to give their name.

- Fair Work help for visa holders and migrants
- Report suspicious activity to Border Watch
4. Webinar for employers hiring international graduates
The Department of Home Affairs’ Business, Industry and Regional Outreach network is holding a free webinar for businesses that want to understand how to employ international student graduates and explore skilled visa options for hiring or sponsoring overseas workers.
Topics include:
- Temporary Graduate visas;
- employer-sponsored visas;
- General Skilled Migration;

- the Check twice, submit once campaign; and
