Advocacy and Community Representation

UAANT helps ensure that the experiences and priorities of Ukrainians in the Northern Territory are included in local and national conversations. Advocacy means listening to the community, identifying shared concerns, and working with partners to communicate those concerns to the organisations and decision-makers able to act on them.

Our Advocacy Priorities

• Fair visa and residency pathways for displaced Ukrainians in Australia
• Access to settlement and government services for people building a new life in the Northern Territory
• Recognition of regional and remote experiences, which can differ from those in Australia’s larger cities
• Support for Ukraine and sustained public awareness of Russia’s continuing war
• Ukrainian culture and community participation within the Northern Territory’s multicultural life

How UAANT Advocates

Our role may include:

• listening through community meetings, consultations, and direct conversations;
• identifying issues affecting more than one person or family;
• sharing the Northern Territory perspective with the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) and other Ukrainian associations;
• contributing to coordinated letters, submissions, meetings, and public campaigns;
• building relationships with government representatives, settlement providers, and community organisations;
• reporting verified updates back to the local community.

Advocacy is strongest when it is informed by lived experience and supported by organisations working together.

The Subclass 786 Permanent Pathway

The permanent pathway for eligible Ukrainian subclass 786 visa holders is an important example of collective advocacy. Displaced Ukrainians, community leaders, larger state associations, and national Ukrainian-Australian organisations maintained sustained engagement with the Australian Government.

UAANT contributed by sharing the concerns and experiences of Ukrainians in the Northern Territory and supporting coordinated representations through the wider Ukrainian-Australian network. We do not claim this outcome as ours alone; it reflects the persistence and cooperation of many people and organisations across Australia.

UAANT’s advocacy addresses shared community issues. It is not a substitute for individual legal advice, migration assistance, medical care, or case management. We cannot promise a government decision or represent a person in a legal or visa matter unless an appropriately authorised professional is formally involved.

Share a Community Concern

If an issue is affecting you and may also affect other Ukrainians in the Northern Territory, we want to understand it. Useful information includes:

• what is happening;
• who is affected;
• whether you have already contacted an official service;
• what practical change or response would help.

Please do not send passports, visa grant letters, health records, or other sensitive personal documents by ordinary email. We will let you know if further information is needed and how it can be provided safely.
