Census 2026: Every Voice Counts

Many of us have recently received a letter from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) with instructions for completing the 2026 Australian Census. If you haven't checked your mailbox yet, now is a good time to do so.

The Census takes place every five years and will be held on Tuesday, 11 August 2026. Every person who is in Australia on Census night must be included, regardless of citizenship or visa status. Most households will complete the Census online using the access code provided in their letter, while paper forms are also available on request.

Why Your Answers Matter for the Ukrainian Community

We encourage every member of our community to participate in the Census and answer all questions openly and accurately. Census data helps show the true size, strength, and needs of the Ukrainian community in Australia.

1. Ancestry Question

One of the most important questions in the Census is Ancestry. If you have Ukrainian heritage, consider selecting Ukrainian as one of your ancestries. The 2026 Census allows people to record up to four ancestries, providing a more accurate picture of Australia's cultural diversity.

2. Language Spoken at Home

When asked which language is used at home, please record Ukrainian wherever this reflects your household. Even if English is also widely used, Ukrainian should not be left unrecorded. Our language is an essential part of Ukrainian identity and culture.

Accurate Census data helps demonstrate the size and growth of our community and strengthens the case for:

• Ukrainian language programs in schools and community education
• Funding for translation and multicultural support services
• Support for Ukrainian cultural organisations
• Stronger evidence for establishing Ukrainian language courses and Ukrainian studies at Australian universities

Some people have concerns about privacy. The ABS is legally required to protect Census information, and personal details are separated from statistical data during processing. The information is used strictly for statistical purposes and is not published in a way that identifies individuals or households.
