A Mother's Day with purpose

On Sunday, 12 May 2024, people across Darwin came together at East Point Reserve for the Mother's Day Classic. Participants walked or ran along the foreshore in honour of family members, friends, and everyone whose life has been affected by breast or ovarian cancer.

The Darwin event formed part of a nationwide community fundraiser. From 2024, participants could choose to support breast cancer research, ovarian cancer research, or both. After event costs, proceeds were directed to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation.

Why UAANT shared it

This was not a UAANT-organised event. We shared it because caring for community health means standing beside people beyond cultural and national boundaries. Cancer affects families from every background, including members and friends of the Ukrainian community in the Northern Territory.

The Mother's Day Classic offered a welcoming way for adults, children, runners, and walkers to show support together. It was also a chance to remember those we have lost, encourage people living with cancer, and help fund research intended to improve prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life.

We thank the organisers, volunteers, participants, and supporters who made the Darwin event possible.
