The Feast of the Dormition: History, Calendar Reform, and Spiritual Community in Darwin

The Dormition of the Mother of God is one of the twelve major feasts in the Christian tradition. It commemorates the end of the Virgin Mary's earthly life and her passage into eternal life. In Ukrainian folk tradition, it is also known as Persha Prechysta (the First Most Pure), while Western Christians celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The feast concludes the two-week Dormition Fast. Under the new calendar, the Forefeast falls on August 14 and the feast itself on August 15. For Ukrainians in the Northern Territory, it is an opportunity to remember this spiritual tradition and join in prayer in Darwin or Palmerston.

The Spiritual Essence and History of the Feast

The word dormition derives from the Latin dormitio and Church Slavonic uspeniye, meaning "falling asleep" in peace. The Christian Church views the transition of the Mother of God not as defeat by death, but as a peaceful falling asleep, after which her body and soul were assumed into heavenly glory by her Divine Son, Jesus Christ.

According to sacred apostolic tradition, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary while she was praying on the Mount of Olives three days prior to her repose, presenting her with a radiant palm branch from paradise. In a miraculous gathering, the Apostles—who were preaching across the known world—were assembled in Jerusalem at the bedside of the Mother of God. Her holy body was laid to rest in a tomb in Gethsemane, near the graves of her parents, Saints Joachim and Anna.

Later Church tradition relates that the Apostle Thomas arrived three days afterward and asked to venerate her resting place. When the tomb was opened, it was found empty, with only the burial linens remaining. Christians have received this account as an expression of hope in eternal life and of Mary's passage into heavenly glory; it should be understood as sacred tradition rather than a New Testament narrative.

The Dormition in Ukrainian History and Culture

In Ukraine, veneration of the Mother of God stretches back over a thousand years. Since the Christianization of Kyivan Rus', Ukrainian rulers and people have placed their towns and nation under the protective mantle (Pokrova) of the Theotokos.

1. Ukraine's Greatest Spiritual Centers:

   • Dormition Cathedral of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra: Founded in 1073 by Saints Anthony and Theodosius of the Caves as the principal cathedral of the monastic cradle of Kyivan Christianity.
   • Ancient Ducal Cathedrals: The Dormition Cathedral in Volodymyr (1160) and Halych (1157), bearing witness to the deep faith of the Princely Era.
   • Pochaiv Lavra and Sviatohirsk Lavra: Both major spiritual bastions in western and eastern Ukraine are dedicated to the Dormition, emphasizing the unifying role of the Mother of God in Ukrainian history.

2. Folk Customs of "Persha Prechysta":

   • In traditional Ukrainian life, the feast signaled the successful completion of the summer harvest. Faithful brought freshly harvested ears of wheat, loaves of bread, and healing herbs and wildflowers (uspenki) to church for blessing.
   • A beloved folk saying notes: "The First Prechysta sows the winter rye, and the Second waters it with rain". The feast also heralded the start of the autumn wedding and matchmaking season.

Calendar Reform: Why the Feast is Celebrated on August 15

For generations under the Julian calendar ("Old Style"), Ukrainian churches marked the Dormition on August 28, while August 14 was celebrated as the Procession of the Cross / Honey Spas (Makoviy).

On September 1, 2023, both the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) changed the dates used for fixed feasts. The OCU adopted the Revised Julian calendar, while the UGCC adopted the Gregorian calendar for fixed feasts and retained its existing Paschal cycle. On both calendars, fixed-feast dates currently coincide with the Gregorian civil calendar:

• August 15: Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God (August 14 marks the Forefeast and the conclusion of the Dormition Fast).
• August 1: Procession of the Precious Cross / Honey Spas (Makoviy), which previously occurred on August 14.

These reforms allow many Ukrainian communities to observe fixed feasts on the same civil dates as Catholic and some Orthodox churches. OCU parishes that followed the required process were permitted to retain the Julian calendar, so some communities continue to celebrate the Dormition on August 28.

While the Ukrainian community in the Northern Territory does not have a permanent resident Ukrainian parish building, faithful Christians have welcoming places to pray and participate in holy sacraments.

Ukrainian Catholic Community

Pastoral care for Ukrainian Greek Catholics across Western Australia and the Northern Territory is provided by Father Ihor Holovko, based in Perth. While Father Ihor visits Darwin for major occasions such as Easter blessings and community liturgies, UAANT understands that a visit to Darwin is not planned for the 2026 Feast of the Dormition. Please confirm current arrangements with UAANT or the relevant parish before travelling.

Catholic faithful are warmly encouraged to participate in services at parishes of the Catholic Diocese of Darwin, which celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15:

Orthodox Faithful and the Ecumenical Patriarchate

For Ukrainian Orthodox believers, understanding canonical unity in the diaspora provides comfort and certainty:

According to the OCU Tomos of Autocephaly:
Under the terms of the Patriarchal and Synodal Tomos granted to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine in 2019, the OCU does not establish separate foreign dioceses or parishes outside Ukraine's borders. Pastoral care for Ukrainian Orthodox Christians in the diaspora is entrusted to the canonical jurisdictions of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

In Australia, the Ecumenical Patriarchate is represented by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. Ukrainian Orthodox faithful and other visitors are welcome to attend the Divine Liturgy at local parishes. Anyone wishing to receive Confession or Holy Communion should contact the parish priest beforehand, as the sacraments are subject to Orthodox discipline and pastoral guidance:

     • Saturday, August 15: Feast-day Divine Liturgy, 7:00–9:00 am, followed by light refreshments from the parish kitchen.
