Standing together in remembrance

On ANZAC Day, 25 April 2026, members of Darwin's Latvian and Ukrainian communities stood side by side at the Darwin Cenotaph to honour the courage, service, and sacrifice of the Anzacs and all who have served.

It was a profound honour to lay a wreath together. This shared act of remembrance reflected the respect our communities hold for those who defended their country, their people, and the freedoms we cherish today.

A shared understanding of freedom

For Ukrainian Australians, remembrance has an immediate and deeply personal meaning. Ukraine continues to defend its freedom, while many families in our community carry their own memories of military service, displacement, and loss. Standing alongside our Latvian friends also recognised the histories that connect our communities and our common understanding that freedom must never be taken for granted.

Together, we joined the march, remembered the fallen, and honoured the enduring Australian spirit of mateship — standing beside one another in difficult times and working together for a peaceful future.
